Top 5 Fun Facts About Horror Movies
As obsessed as we are with Halloween and haunted houses, we love horror movies just as much! Here is my top 5 list of fun facts you probably didn’t know.
5. PSYCHO AND THE TOILET FLUSHING
Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, Psycho, was the very first movie to feature a toilet flushing. Today that idea seems silly but in 1960 it was a first. As a side note, it was also the first movie to have the sound of a toilet flushing. It appears Hitchcock was way ahead of the times. Haha!
4. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY IS THE MOST PROFITABLE
I distinctly remember when this movie came out and I thought it was such a creative idea for a horror film. It is often compared to The Blair Witch Project, but has went on to become far more profitable. The initial budget for Paranormal Activity was only $15,000 and went on to gross 193 million worldwide! Another fun fact, Steven Spielberg loved the movie so much he suggested an alternative ending to the film. Which is the ending we are familiar with today.
3. THE CONJURING IS BASED OFF REAL-LIFE PEOPLE
The movie, The Conjuring, which features Ed and Lorraine Warren are based on real people (As seen in the picture above). Director, James Wan, told Entertainment Weekly, “One thing I had never explored was the chance to tell a story that’s based on real-life characters, real-life people. So those were the things that led me to The Conjuring.” Another fun fact, the movie Annabelle is based off a real raggedy Ann doll that Ed and Lorraine believe to be demon possessed. It lives in their occult museum on display under lock and key. Unfortunately Lorraine Warren just recently passed away on April 18th, 2019.
2. THE BILLY PUPPET FROM SAW
The original Billy puppet was handmade by director James Wan. The puppet was so precious to the filmmakers that they paid for it to have its own seat on a flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles. Another fun fact about Billy, he has made sneak peak appearances in other movies such as Dead Silence and Insidious.
1. MICHAEL MYERS MASK IS THE WILLIAM SHATNER MASK
This rumor is completely true. The film crew was on such a low budget that they used the Captain Kirk mask for Michael Myers. In fact, the movie was on such a low budget that the actor playing Michael Myers was only given $20 per day. The film’s budget was $320,000 and went on to gross $47 million! Also, an interesting fact… they had no idea how successful the movie would be and didn’t even keep the mask from the first movie. That’s why you’ll notice Michael Myers mask changes throughout the movies.
